CSC’s new Patient Administration System at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust goes live with record number of users

May 11, 2006

Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC:NYSE), the Local Support Provider (LSP) for the NHS Connecting for Health North West and West Midlands Cluster, announced today the implementation of its largest Patient Administration System (PAS) to-date as part of the National Programme for IT (NPfIT), which is being delivered by NHS Connecting for Health, with over 1,700 users and support to the 6,000 plus NHS staff who work across three hospital sites.

The three NHS hospitals - Furness General Hospital, Royal Lancaster Infirmary (Lancaster) and the Westmorland General Hospital treat around half a million patient episodes a year across an area of 1,000 square miles. Already live with the iSOFT, (a software solution provider in the CSC Alliance) ORMIS Theatre System since last March, the new iSOFT PAS brings immediate benefits to staff and patients by allowing patient administrative information to be available simultaneously across these sites.

Close collaboration with the Trust’s staff, clinicians and managers led to this successful installation of one of the largest PAS systems to date in the NHS as part of National Programme. Five years worth of data for more than 500,000 patients have been transferred to this new system.

Kevin McGee, Chief Operating Officer, said: “This new system will enable the Trust to begin to deliver the electronic patient record. We are confident it will enable new processes that will benefit both patients and staff.”

Steve Fairclough, Head of Health Informatics, added that: "The success of this project is a testament to the hard working and dedicated NHS staff at all levels within the Trust. Particular thanks must go to the Health Informatics team. They have worked closely with our partners the CSC Alliance to deliver this important step towards our goal of an electronic patient record".

Ian Johnson, Account Executive for the CSC Alliance in the Cumbria and Lancashire area, praised the strong working relationship developed between themselves and the NHS: "The successful ‘go-live’ of this system has been the result of a strong working partnership between the NHS implementation team at University Hospitals Morecambe Bay and the local CSC Alliance team. The project was delivered on schedule with NHS staff able to benefit immediately from the new technology. It marks a major milestone for the implementation of the National Programme for IT in Cumbria & Lancashire and in the North West and West Midlands Cluster."
